Common limitations in an NFPA 70E online training review

The biggest limitation is context. Most generic online courses are designed for broad use across industries, which means they often stay at a high level. They may define terms correctly and still fail to address your actual switchgear lineup, voltage classes, maintenance practices, lockout/tagout gaps, or arc flash label format.

Another limitation is skill verification. NFPA 70E expects training to be more than content exposure. Workers must understand the safety-related work practices that apply to their assignments, and employers need a reasonable basis for concluding that training was understood. A multiple-choice quiz can help, but it is not the same as observing a worker apply lockout steps, inspect PPE, read equipment labeling, or plan a task.

There is also the issue of stale content. The standard changes over time, and many vendors are slow to update course material. If a provider does not clearly identify the edition being taught, or if the examples are obviously dated, that is a problem. Training aligned to an old edition may still have value, but it creates unnecessary confusion when your written program and labels are based on a newer framework.

How to judge course quality before you buy

In any serious NFPA 70E online training review, the first thing to verify is audience fit. Ask whether the course is intended for qualified persons, unqualified persons, or supervisors. If the answer is vague, expect the content to be vague too.

Next, review the actual topics covered. A credible course should address shock boundaries, arc flash boundaries, energized work decision-making, establishing an electrically safe work condition, PPE categories or incident energy-based selection as applicable, human performance factors, and the role of job safety planning and job briefing. If those topics are treated lightly, the training is probably better suited for awareness than field application.

Look closely at how the course handles normal operation. This is one of the most misunderstood areas in practice. Workers and supervisors need clarity on when operation of equipment is considered normal and when abnormal conditions change the risk profile. If the course skips that distinction, it leaves a major gap.

The testing approach also matters. A final quiz is fine, but the better programs use scenario-based questions that force the learner to apply the standard. If every question is a vocabulary check, the course is unlikely to improve field decisions.

Documentation should be reviewed too. Completion certificates are useful, but they are only one part of the record. You should be able to document course version, training date, assigned audience, score, and where the course fits within your larger electrical safety program.

The difference between compliance training and risk reduction training

This is where many buyers get disappointed. They purchase an online course expecting it to solve an electrical safety weakness, when the real issue is broader than training.

Compliance training explains requirements. Risk reduction training connects those requirements to your equipment, work practices, labels, PPE, switching procedures, and maintenance realities. The first helps satisfy a training obligation. The second helps prevent injuries.

If your one-line diagrams are outdated, your arc flash study is old, your labels do not reflect current settings, or your workers are routinely troubleshooting energized equipment without strong task planning, no online course will fix that by itself. Training needs to be tied to the actual hazards present at the site.

This is why the best use of online learning is often as one layer in a complete electrical safety program. It supports awareness and consistency, but it should sit alongside engineering analysis, documented procedures, equipment labeling, field verification, and supervisor accountability.

When online training is enough and when it is not

If you need general awareness for non-electrical staff, contractor orientation, or periodic reinforcement for an already well-managed safety program, online delivery may be enough. It can be efficient, defensible, and cost-effective.

If your employees are qualified persons performing troubleshooting, testing, voltage verification, energized diagnostics, switching, or maintenance inside the restricted approach boundary or within arc flash exposure conditions, online-only training is usually not enough. Those workers often need facility-specific instruction, practical review of job tasks, and some form of hands-on evaluation.

A strong buying decision starts by defining the goal. Then match training to site conditions. If your workforce spans multiple roles, use different training paths.
